Your first credit card limit is mostly decided by your monthly take-home salary, adjusted for your credit score and existing EMIs. Banks don't publish formulas, but first limits of about 1–4× monthly income are typical.

What else affects your limit
- Credit score: 750+ usually gets the top of the range.
- EMIs (FOIR): if more than about 40–50% of your salary goes to EMIs, expect a lower limit or a decline.
- Bank relationship: salary account holders often get pre-approved offers with higher limits.
- Employer category and city can also matter.
How to increase your credit limit
- Pay the full bill on time for 6–12 months.
- Keep your utilization under 30%.
- Update your latest salary slip or ITR with the bank.
- Request an increase in the bank app. Many banks also offer pre-approved increases.

Is the credit limit based on gross or net salary?
Banks usually look at your net (take-home) monthly salary, as shown on your salary slips and bank statements.
