Key takeaways

  • For car commuters, a fuel card like BPCL SBI Octane or IndianOil HDFC returns 4–7% on fuel within its caps.
  • For metro commuters, one NCMC card works on Delhi Metro and, since August 2026, the Noida Metro Aqua Line.
  • The FASTag annual pass costs ₹3,075 for FY 2026-27 and covers up to 200 toll crossings on national highways.
  • Cab and food spends are best on a general cashback card.

Commuting in Delhi NCR means some mix of metro, car, cabs and highway tolls, often across three cities. The right cards can save you several thousand rupees a year on these costs. Here's what works for each type of commuter.

If you drive: fuel cards

Fuel is where specialist cards shine, because general cards give nothing on fuel. Estimated yearly value after fees for different monthly fuel bills (plus some everyday spending):

Spending patternBPCL SBI OctaneIndianOil HDFCBPCL SBI
₹3,000 fuel a month
₹13,000/month
₹2,491₹3,402 ★₹2,430
₹6,000 fuel a month

₹7,800 ★₹3,482₹4,440
₹10,000 fuel a month
₹28,000/month
₹9,360 ★₹3,643₹6,840

Fuel rewards only apply at the partner brand (BPCL or IndianOil), and caps apply. BPCL SBI Octane's 25X fuel rewards cover up to ₹7,000 of BPCL fuel a month (from May 2026). Map the partner pumps on your route before choosing. More in our best fuel credit cards ranking.

If you take the metro: one NCMC card

Delhi Metro accepts NCMC cards from any bank on all lines, including the Airport Express Line. Since 15 August 2026, the Noida Metro Aqua Line accepts NCMC too. One NCMC card can now cover most NCR metro trips. See NCMC cards by bank, Delhi Metro recharge and the Noida Metro card.

If you use highways: the FASTag annual pass

If you regularly drive on national highways and expressways, NHAI's FASTag annual pass may beat paying per toll. For FY 2026-27 it costs ₹3,075 (up from ₹3,000) and is valid for one year or 200 toll crossings, whichever comes first, on NHAI-run national highway and expressway plazas for private cars, jeeps and vans. Buy it on the Rajmarg Yatra app or NHAI's website.

Note: the pass covers NHAI national highway and national expressway plazas only. State highway and city toll roads charge normally through your FASTag balance.

Rewards on FASTag recharges vary by card, and many cards treat them like wallet loads with no rewards. If you recharge a lot, check your card's terms.

If you use cabs and food delivery

Cab rides and food orders are best on a general cashback card:

  • SBI Cashback: 5% on online spends, including cab and food apps, within its monthly cap.
  • Axis Bank Ace: strong on bill payments and some partner apps, with a combined monthly cap.
  • Swiggy HDFC cards: if food delivery is your biggest spend.

A simple two-card NCR setup

  1. Fuel card for your car (BPCL SBI Octane or IndianOil HDFC, depending on which pumps you use).
  2. Cashback card for everything else, including cabs, food and online shopping.
  3. Plus an NCMC debit card for the metro.

How much can an NCR commuter save?

Take a Gurugram resident who drives to work three days a week and takes the metro twice. Say they spend ₹6,000 a month on fuel at BPCL pumps, ₹2,500 on cabs, ₹4,000 on food delivery and ₹15,000 on other shopping and bills.

  • With one general card that gives nothing on fuel, fuel earns ₹0, and the rest earns whatever the card's base rate is.
  • With BPCL SBI Octane for fuel and a 5% online cashback card for cabs, food and online shopping (within caps), the same spending can return several thousand rupees more a year, after both fees.

The exact figure depends on your pumps, apps and caps, so plug your own numbers into the credit card finder.

Common mistakes NCR commuters make

  • Using a fuel card at the wrong brand's pump. BPCL cards reward BPCL fuel; IndianOil cards reward IndianOil. At other pumps you get little or nothing.
  • Ignoring the fuel surcharge waiver limits. Most cards waive the 1% surcharge only within a transaction band (for example ₹400–₹4,000) and up to a monthly cap.
  • Loading too much on a metro card. Metro card balances can't always be refunded. Keep a modest balance.
  • Buying the FASTag annual pass without checking your route. If most of your tolls are on state or city roads, the pass won't cover them.

Parking and airport runs

Some NCR parking lots accept NCMC. For flights from IGI Airport, check your card's lounge access in our airport lounge finder. The Airport Express Line takes NCMC cards too.
