What credit limit can you expect?
Banks typically set a first credit limit of about 2–4 times your monthly income, adjusted for your credit score, existing loans and relationship with the bank. At ₹1 lakh a month and a good credit score, a first limit of ₹2–4 lakh is common, and it usually rises with good repayment. See the full table on our credit limit calculator.
Cards you probably can't get yet
HDFC revised the eligibility for its super-premium cards: Infinia needs ₹5 lakh a month (salaried, private sector) and Diners Club Black Metal ₹2.5 lakh a month. Axis Magnus also targets much higher incomes. At ₹1 lakh, Regalia Gold, Atlas and cashback cards are the realistic top end. Read how to get HDFC Infinia for the upgrade path.
How to choose
- You shop online a lot: a cashback card like SBI Cashback or HDFC Millennia, watching the monthly caps.
- You travel 4+ times a year: Regalia Gold or Atlas, for points worth more on flights and hotels plus lounge access.
- You hate fees: a lifetime free card like IDFC FIRST Select, which also has zero forex markup on IDFC FIRST cards since September 2026.
- You spend a lot on bills and groceries: check category caps and exclusions; see school fees and insurance and rent payments.
Don't overspend to "earn" rewards
At a ₹1 lakh salary, a 2% reward card is worth ₹20,000+ a year only if you pay the full bill every month. Card interest in India is often 36–45% a year, so carrying a balance wipes out rewards instantly. Set auto-pay for the total amount due. More: how card interest is calculated.
