Key takeaways

  • Most big banks now charge about 1% on rent paid by credit card: HDFC 1% capped at ₹4,999 per transaction, ICICI 1%.
  • Rent platforms add their own fee, often 1–2% or more, on top.
  • Many cards give no or capped rewards on rent.
  • It only makes sense for a short-term cash crunch or to reach a milestone worth more than the total fees.

Paying rent by credit card was once a popular "hack" for rewards and milestones. Since 2022, banks have steadily closed it: they've added fees, removed rewards and capped points on rent. In 2026, paying rent by card costs money in most cases. Here's what it really costs and when it's still worth doing.

What banks charge on rent payments

BankRent feeRewards
HDFC Bank1%, capped at ₹4,999 per transactionRestricted; check your card's terms
ICICI Bank1% on rent payments (since October 2022)Generally not rewarded
SBI CardProcessing fee on rent transactionsNo reward points on rent on most cards since April 2024
Axis BankCheck your card's schedule of chargesRent excluded from rewards and cashback on many cards

18% GST applies on top of every bank fee. Rules differ between card variants and change often, so check your card's latest schedule of charges.

Plus the platform fee

Rent payment apps (CRED, NoBroker, Paytm and others) charge their own convenience fee, commonly 1–2% or more depending on the app, card network and offers. So your total cost is often 2–3% plus GST.

A worked example

Rent: ₹30,000 a month, paid by an HDFC card through an app charging 1.5%.

CostPer monthPer year
Bank fee (1%)₹300₹3,600
GST on bank fee (18%)₹54₹648
Platform fee (1.5%)₹450₹5,400
Total₹804₹9,648

That's about 2.7% of your rent. Very few cards return more than that on rent, and many return nothing.

When paying rent by card can still make sense

  • A short cash crunch. Paying ₹800 in fees for up to 50 days of credit is far cheaper than a late rent fee, a personal loan or missing the payment, as long as you clear the card bill in full.
  • Hitting a milestone. If one rent payment pushes you past a milestone or fee waiver worth more than the fees (and rent counts toward it), the maths can work. Check the terms: many cards now exclude rent from milestones.
  • Welcome offers. Some new cards need a minimum spend in the first 60–90 days. Rent can help, if it counts.

When it doesn't

  • Every month, "for the points". Fees usually cost more than the rewards.
  • If you can't pay the full card bill. Card interest of 36–45% a year turns a small fee into an expensive loan.
  • If your landlord could be paid by UPI or bank transfer for free.

Rent payment checklist before you pay by card

  1. Check your bank's fee in the latest schedule of charges on its website, not an old blog post.
  2. Check the platform's fee at the payment screen, for your card network. Fees differ for Visa, Mastercard, RuPay and Amex.
  3. Check rewards and milestones. Look for "rent" in your card's exclusion list, including for fee waivers and milestone spends.
  4. Add the numbers. Total cost = bank fee + 18% GST on it + platform fee. Compare with any reward you'll really get.
  5. Make sure you can pay the full bill on the due date. If not, don't do it.

Is paying rent by card safe?

Use only well-known platforms, and check that the landlord's bank account and name are correct before paying, because card payments to the wrong account are hard to reverse. Never share your card OTP with anyone who says they're helping you with rent payments. Card-based rent platforms also usually need your landlord's bank details and sometimes a rent agreement, so keep a copy ready.

What about tax and HRA?

Paying rent by card doesn't change your HRA claim, but keep proper rent receipts from your landlord. The app's payment receipt alone may not satisfy your employer. If your annual rent is above ₹1 lakh, your employer will usually ask for your landlord's PAN, whatever the payment method.

Cheaper ways to manage rent

  • Pay by UPI or bank transfer, free.
  • Set a standing instruction on salary day.
  • Negotiate the due date with your landlord to fall after payday.
  • Put your other spending on the right reward card instead. See using the right card for each purchase.
