Key takeaways

  • Most Indian cards now unlock lounge visits only after a minimum spend in the previous month or quarter.
  • Several banks moved to app-based vouchers or QR codes instead of card swipes.
  • Guest visits are usually charged. Add-on cardholders may or may not get their own visits.
  • Check eligibility in your bank app the day before you fly.

A few years ago, most mid-range credit cards came with free airport lounge visits: swipe the card, walk in. In 2025 and 2026, Indian banks rewrote the rules. Today, lounge access is mostly a reward for spending, and the details differ by bank.

The big change: spend-based access

Most banks now require a minimum spend in the previous month or quarter before a lounge visit is unlocked. Examples from our changes log:

CardLounge rule (2026)
HDFC Bank Regalia GoldDomestic access needs ₹60,000 spend in the previous quarter (from July 2026)
Scapia Federal BankDomestic lounge access needs ₹20,000 monthly spend (doubled in February 2026)
IDFC FIRST WealthLounge visits halved, and access needs ₹20,000 monthly spend (January 2026)
Axis Bank cardsDomestic access based on eligible spend in the previous 3 months under Axis's lounge programme
SBI CardComplimentary domestic visits cut from 8 to 4 a year on several cards (January 2026)
Airtel Axis BankLounge access removed (April 2026)

Premium cards like HDFC Bank Infinia Metal and HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Metal still offer unlimited access, but with high fees and high income requirements.

How access actually works at the lounge

  1. Check eligibility in your bank app. Many banks now show whether you've unlocked a visit this quarter.
  2. Get a voucher if your bank uses them. HDFC Bank, for example, switched lounge entry to a digital voucher in January 2026. You generate it in the app or on the bank's portal before travel.
  3. At the lounge, present your card, boarding pass and voucher or QR code. Some lounges run a small authorisation charge on the card to verify it. It's refunded.

Domestic vs international

Domestic access usually runs through programmes managed by the card network or bank. International access typically uses a membership like Priority Pass or DragonPass, issued with premium cards. Two recent changes to note:

  • From 28 August 2026, Axis Bank's Priority Pass no longer works at domestic lounges. You need the physical card for domestic access, while international access is unchanged.
  • A DragonPass partnership with Adani Airports opened Adani-run lounges, such as those at Mumbai, to more cardholders. See our Mumbai airport lounge guide.

Guests and add-on cards

  • Guests: most cards charge for guests at the lounge's rate. Only some premium cards include complimentary guest visits.
  • Add-on cards: on some cards, add-on members get their own visits; on others, they share the primary cardholder's quota or get none. Check your card's terms before relying on it for family trips.

What if you're not eligible?

Walk-in access at major Indian airports typically costs ₹2,000–₹3,500 per visit. If you fly two or three times a year, that may be cheaper than chasing a spend threshold you wouldn't otherwise reach.

Is lounge access worth choosing a card for?

Value it honestly: count only the visits you'll actually make, and value each at what you'd otherwise pay (often nothing, if you'd just skip the lounge). For most people, lounge access is a nice extra, not a reason to pick a card. Rewards, fees and forex matter more. Our best travel credit cards ranking weighs all of these.

Checklist before every trip

  1. Confirm your spend-based eligibility for this month or quarter in the bank app.
  2. Generate a voucher or QR code if your bank requires one.
  3. Carry the physical card, since some lounges no longer accept digital cards or memberships for domestic access.
  4. Check the lounge's terminal and opening hours on the airport's website.
  5. Keep enough credit limit for the authorisation charge.

Lounge rules change often. Every change we find is logged with its source on our credit card changes page, and you can get email alerts.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Spend threshold not met in the previous month or quarter. The most common reason in 2026.
  • Quarterly visit quota used up, sometimes by an add-on cardholder.
  • Wrong card presented, such as a digital or virtual card where the lounge requires the physical card.
  • Lounge not part of your card's programme, especially at terminals with several lounges.
  • Card blocked for international use at an overseas lounge. Enable it before you fly.
