Key takeaways
- Cashback is simple, guaranteed and has no blackout dates.
- Miles can be worth ₹1–3+ each on premium cabins, but only with award availability and planning.
- On travel spend, Axis Atlas (5 miles per ₹100) beats 5% cashback if you value miles at ₹1 or more.
- For economy domestic travel, a cashback card is often just as good and much simpler.
Should your flight bookings earn airline miles or plain cashback? It comes down to how much you value a mile and how much effort you'll put into redeeming.
The case for cashback
- SBI Card Cashback pays 5% on online spends, including flights booked online, capped at ₹2,000 of cashback a month since April 2026.
- Amazon Pay ICICI Bank pays Prime members 5% on Amazon. During the 2026 Great Indian Festival, Amazon also advertised up to 15% off plus 5% cashback on flights and hotels for Prime members with this card.
- Pros: guaranteed value, no blackout dates, no award seat hunting, nothing to expire if it's auto-credited.
- Cons: capped upside. 5% is 5%.
The case for miles
- Axis Bank Atlas earns 5 EDGE Miles per ₹100 on travel and 2 elsewhere, transferable at 1:2 to partners like KrisFlyer and Air India Maharaja Club (within annual caps).
- Pros: high upside. Premium-cabin redemptions can be worth well over ₹1 per mile.
- Cons: award availability, transfer caps, surcharges, devaluations and a learning curve.
Break-even on a ₹10,000 flight
| Card | Earned | Value |
|---|---|---|
| SBI Cashback (online booking) | 5% cashback | ₹500 (within the monthly cap) |
| Axis Atlas (booked with the airline) | 500 EDGE Miles → 1,000 partner miles | ₹500 at ₹0.50/mile · ₹1,000 at ₹1 · ₹2,000 at ₹2 |
Atlas matches 5% cashback when a partner mile is worth ₹0.50, and beats it when you redeem for more. That usually means long-haul or premium-cabin awards.
Don't forget the fees
Axis Atlas costs ₹5,000 + GST a year with no spend-based waiver. SBI Cashback's ₹999 fee is waived at ₹2 lakh a year, and Amazon Pay ICICI is free. For a traveller spending ₹50,000 a month (₹20,000 on travel), our estimates after fees are:
| Spending pattern | Axis Atlas | SBI Cashback | Amazon Pay ICICI |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹20,000 travel + everyday spends ₹50,000/month | ₹14,600 | ₹19,320 ★ | ₹7,560 |
Atlas valued at ₹1 per EDGE Mile. At ₹0.50 its value roughly halves.
Who should pick which
- Economy domestic travel, simple life: cashback.
- Several international trips a year, flexible dates, enjoy planning: miles.
- Somewhere in between: a cashback card for everyday spending, plus a portal or miles card for travel. See our cashback vs points guide.
Risks with miles in 2026
Axis removed Accor, Marriott and Qatar as transfer partners in April 2026 and moved major airlines into a capped group in September. Miles are worth what programmes allow, and that can change. Keep balances working, not hoarded.
How to value a mile for yourself
- Pick a trip you'd genuinely take, with dates.
- Note the cash fare on the airline's website.
- Find the award price (miles plus taxes) on the partner programme.
- Value per mile = (cash fare − award taxes) ÷ miles needed.
- Compare with 5% cashback on the same fare. If miles don't clearly win, take the cashback.
Be honest in step 2: if you'd never pay a business-class fare, the "value" of a business-class award is really closer to the economy fare you'd otherwise buy.
Hybrid strategy that works for most people
- Use a cashback card for everyday online and offline spending.
- Use a miles or portal card for flights and hotels, where it earns its highest rate.
- Redeem miles within a year or two for trips you plan, instead of saving for a "someday" redemption that may be devalued.
A note on caps
SBI Cashback's ₹2,000 monthly online cap means a ₹60,000 international ticket earns only ₹2,000 (3.3%), less if you've already used some of the cap that month. Atlas's accelerated travel earning runs up to ₹2 lakh a month, so it handles big tickets better.
FAQs
Which is better for beginners: miles or cashback?
Cashback. It needs no planning and the value is guaranteed.
Can airline miles expire?
Often, yes, depending on the programme's activity rules. Cashback credited to your statement doesn't expire.
How much is an airline mile worth in India?
It varies by redemption. Divide the cash fare (minus taxes you pay anyway) by the miles needed. Economy domestic awards often give less than premium international ones.
Do I earn airline miles on flights booked with cashback cards?
Yes. Your frequent-flyer number still earns miles from the airline for flying, separately from the card's cashback.
Is Amazon Pay ICICI good for flight bookings?
For Prime members booking via Amazon, yes, especially during sales when Amazon has advertised extra flight discounts. Outside Amazon it earns 1%.
Does Axis Atlas earn 5 miles on all travel?
On eligible travel spends (airlines, hotels and travel bookings) up to ₹2 lakh a month. Beyond that, and on other spends, it earns 2 EDGE Miles per ₹100.
What happens to miles if a transfer partner is removed?
Miles already transferred stay in the airline account. Bank points you haven't transferred can only go to the remaining partners, as happened when Axis removed Accor, Marriott and Qatar in April 2026.
