Key takeaways
- Milestones reward you for crossing a spend threshold in a quarter or a year.
- Only count milestones you would reach with your normal spending.
- Excluded spends (rent, wallets, fuel, gift cards) often don't count towards the target.
- Check whether the cycle is a calendar quarter, card-anniversary year or statement cycle.
A milestone benefit is a bonus you get for reaching a spending target, such as a ₹1,000 voucher every quarter you spend ₹1 lakh, or bonus miles when you cross ₹3 lakh in a year. On some cards, milestones are worth more than the base rewards. They also tempt people to overspend.

How much difference milestones make
Take HDFC Millennia. HDFC's official FAQ says it pays 5% on 10 online merchants and 1% elsewhere, each capped at 1,000 points (₹1,000) a month, plus a ₹1,000 voucher for every ₹1 lakh spent in a calendar quarter. Someone spending about ₹35,000 a month (₹1.05 lakh a quarter) earns four vouchers a year, adding ₹4,000 to their rewards. Spend ₹30,000 a month and you get none. The threshold is a cliff, not a slope.
That's why our credit card finder only adds milestone value when your yearly spend actually crosses the threshold.
What counts towards a milestone
- Usually counted: regular retail purchases, online shopping, travel and dining.
- Often excluded: fees and charges, EMI conversions, cash withdrawals, rent, fuel, wallet loads and government payments.
- Recent tightening: from 28 August 2026, Axis Bank excluded gift card purchases from rewards and milestones. It also announced that SELECT card milestones will count only reward-eligible spends from 1 October 2026.
Watch the cycle
Milestones can run on a calendar quarter (January–March and so on), a card-anniversary year, or a statement cycle. A big purchase on the last day of a quarter may post in the next one. Transactions count when they settle, not when you tap.
Should you chase a milestone?
Only if you're close and have genuine spending you can move earlier or onto this card. A simple test:
- How much more do you need to spend to reach it?
- Would you spend that money anyway in the next few weeks?
- Does moving that spend cost you rewards on another card?
If you'd have to buy things you don't need, or pay fees (for example rent-payment fees of 1% or more) to get there, the milestone usually isn't worth it. Check the maths with our rent payment calculator before using rent to hit a target.
Milestones and fee waivers
Many cards also waive the renewal fee when you cross a yearly spend. That's effectively a milestone worth the fee plus 18% GST. We cover it in detail in spend-based fee waivers: are they worth chasing?
How to include milestones when choosing a card
When you compare cards, add a milestone's value only if you'll reliably cross the threshold with your normal spending. Two cards illustrate how much this matters:
- Axis Bank Atlas adds bonus miles at ₹3 lakh, ₹7.5 lakh and ₹15 lakh a year. For someone spending ₹8 lakh a year, the first two milestones add 5,000 EDGE Miles, which is a big share of the card's total value.
- HDFC Bank Regalia Gold adds flight vouchers at ₹5 lakh and ₹7.5 lakh. At ₹4 lakh a year, you get neither, and the card's value drops sharply.
Our credit card finder includes milestones automatically, so you can test different spending levels.
Tracking your progress
- Most banks show milestone progress in the app or net banking. HDFC, for example, shows it under the rewards section.
- Keep receipts for large purchases in the last weeks of a cycle, in case a transaction settles late or is miscategorised.
- If a milestone isn't credited within the stated period, raise it with the bank. If they don't resolve it within 30 days, you can escalate. See our guide to the RBI Ombudsman.
Milestone vouchers: read the terms
Vouchers often have short validity, blackout dates or limited brands. A ₹5,000 flight voucher that only works on one airline's own website is worth less if that airline doesn't fly your routes. Value a voucher at what you'd realistically save, not its face value.
FAQs
What is a milestone benefit on a credit card?
A reward, such as a voucher, bonus points or a fee waiver, that you get when your spending crosses a set amount within a quarter or year.
Do EMI transactions count towards milestones?
Usually not. HDFC's Millennia FAQ, for example, says EMI spends don't earn points, and most banks exclude them from milestones too.
When are milestone vouchers credited?
Typically within 30–90 days after the qualifying period ends. HDFC says Millennia voucher messages are sent within 30 working days.
Are milestone benefits worth more than regular rewards?
On some cards, yes, for spenders who cross the thresholds. For anyone below them, they're worth nothing, so always check your actual yearly spend.
