Key takeaways

  • Since 1 July 2024, third-party apps must pay credit card bills through RBI's Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS, now called Bharat Connect).
  • All five largest issuers (HDFC, SBI Card, ICICI, Axis and Kotak) are live on BBPS, so most apps can pay their bills.
  • Paying via UPI or net banking on BBPS apps is usually free. Check for convenience fees before you pay.
  • Pay a day or two early. Credit can take time to reach the card account, especially on due dates.

You can pay a credit card bill from your bank's app, net banking, UPI or any of the popular payment apps. Which is "best" depends on speed, fees and whether you care about app rewards. Here's how it works in 2026 and what to use.

First, the rule that changed everything: BBPS

From 1 July 2024, RBI required credit card bill payments made through third-party apps to be routed through the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), now branded Bharat Connect. At first, some big issuers weren't ready, so their bills couldn't be paid on apps like CRED or PhonePe. Since then the major issuers have joined. HDFC Bank, SBI Card, ICICI Bank, Kotak and IndusInd were live within weeks, and Axis Bank followed, so the five largest issuers are all on BBPS.

What this means for you: payments on BBPS apps are tracked end to end, credited faster, and you get a BBPS reference number you can use if anything goes wrong.

Which should you use?

  • Paying on or near the due date: use your bank's own app or net banking. It's free and credits fastest.
  • Paying a few days early and want offers: any BBPS app (CRED, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, Amazon Pay) paid via UPI or net banking.
  • Several cards from different banks: an app that shows all your bills and due dates in one place, like CRED or your UPI app's bill section.

How to pay a credit card bill on a UPI app (step by step)

  1. Open the app and go to Bills or Credit card bill.
  2. Choose your bank and enter the card number (or pick a saved card).
  3. The app fetches your bill amount via BBPS. Choose the total amount due, the minimum due or a custom amount.
  4. Pay using UPI or net banking. Avoid paying a credit card bill with another credit card, which usually isn't allowed or attracts fees.
  5. Save the BBPS reference number from the confirmation screen.

How long does a payment take?

BBPS payments are usually credited quickly, often within minutes to a working day. Delays can still happen around weekends, holidays and peak due-date traffic. Pay at least 1–2 days before the due date to be safe. Under RBI rules, you're only reported as past due, or charged a late fee, if payment is more than 3 days late, but don't rely on that margin.

Other ways to pay

  • Auto-debit (standing instruction) from your savings account for the full amount. This is the best way to never miss a due date.
  • UPI to the card's virtual address, where your bank supports it (for example, some banks give each card a UPI ID).
  • NEFT/IMPS to the card number, where supported by your bank.
  • Cash or cheque at a branch. This is slow, and some banks charge for cash payments.

Safety tips

  • Only use official apps from the Play Store or App Store. Never pay via links in SMS or WhatsApp.
  • No genuine app asks for your card OTP or CVV to pay a bill. See our scam guide.
  • If a payment is debited but not credited, raise it with the app using the BBPS reference, then with your bank. See our dispute guide.
